• The Rules state that every entry submitted does not contain any third party works: "...the entry submitted is the result of his/her own independent creation and does not contain any third-party works of authorship..." (http://makearmanotwar.com/rules#requirements-and-submission-of-the-entries). Does this also apply to dependency for the submitted entry on other addons?

  Dependencies to other addons are not allowed, as it would be extremely hard for us to cope with all the addon dependencies for every entry. However, there is one exception to this rule: the Community Based AddOns (CBA) package. If you really need something for your entry (e.g. mission), you may make the required addon a part of the mission PBO.

• Can I use the dependency to Community Based AddOns (CBA) in my contest entry?

  Yes, it's the only exception so far we decided to make based on public demand. If your entry (e.g. mission) requires CBA to run, please let us know by noting the fact in the readme, as required by the contest rules.

• I would like to legally purchase and obtain license for a third-party work (e.g. music) and use it in my contest entry. Can I do that?

  It's not a problem as long as the license granted to you for such work does not contradict the Contest Rules (see section "Requirements and Submission of Entries"). All in all, this is entirely in the participant's responsibility, but we require mentioning of the source in an attached readme or otherwise let Bohemia Interactive know about any third-party works contained in a contest Entry.

• I would like to base my Entry on something from Bohemia Interactive's data packages. Is that allowed?

  Yes, feel free to use the licensed content, but please make sure you publish it in compliance with the data packs' licenses.

• We will use only our own data, created from scratch using the Arma 3 Tools, in our our submission. Is that allowed?

  Yes. You are not just allowed, but also encouraged to use original work.

• Can I use somebody else's work licensed under Arma Public License (APL) or Arma Public License Share Alike (APL-SA) in my contest entry?

  Not without permission. Winning a prize in the competition could be considered commercial use, therefore you can NOT include any 3rd-party content in your submission that is licenced for non commercial use only (e.g. under Arma Public Licenses or Creative Commons Non Commercial Licenses) without consent and specific license from the 3rd party.

• Can I use a part of the Bohemia Interactive's data packs in my contest entry?

  Yes, Bohemia Interactive grants license all participants in MANW to use its licensed data from http://www.bistudio.com/english/community/licenses/licenced-data-packages in the contest, as well as to use Arma 3 and Arma 3 Tools to create competition entries.

• What's the idea of the ALDP?

  Arma Licensed Data Pack delivers the data which doesn't need to be unbinarized to be usable, and allows us to define what data we release and under which license.

• Can people extract the ALDP data and repack it with their addons (aka textures, sounds)?

  Yes, of course, this is the purpose of the package (and in regards to DLCs, the way to get to the data of otherwise encrypted PBOs). It's important to keep in mind that APL-SA requires the modified data to be released under the same license.

• I am modifying a model from A2SM, and I am adding some data from ALDP (both provided by BI under the APL). Will I be able to combine data from A2SM and ALDP in my PBO, and can I release my addon to the public?

  You can combine and repack the data and publicly release such an addon, provided you fulfill the requirements of the APL (attribution of the original work, non-commercial, Arma-only). We recommend to release your work under APL.

• Can I use a license other than Bohemia Interactive's content licenses (APL, APL-SA, DML-SA) for my work?

  If you use somebody else's work to create a modification for Arma games, you always need to respect their licenses (e.g. in the event you base your modification on data licensed under Bohemia Interactive's content licenses, you need to abide to their conditions). If the content of your modification is made entirely by yourself, you can release it under any license (e.g. CC BY-NC-ND 4.0).

• Does "Share Alike" mean that I need have to release the source models of my modification?

  The license does not specify in which format the data ought to be shared, and we do not require the addon makers to publish unbinarized sources along with the binarized addons under the APL-SA license. Obviously, it's better to release data in unbinarized format for their further use, which is what we would consider as beneficial for the Arma creative community. Also, we recommend respecting the original data under APL-SA you modify: if somebody released his addon in MLOD format as well, it would be a matter of courtesy to release it likewise.

• If I use content that is included in a PBO that's in the "Arma Licensed Data Pack" which is licensed with the APL - does just including the file in the PBO that I produce count as "Share Alike", or must I release the file(s) separately?

  Data packages licensed under APL do not require you to release the derivative work based on them as "Share Alike" (as would be the case with data released under APL-SA). We do not require unbinarized sources for derivative works to be released for data under APL-SA, simply adding the license text and stating in readme that your addon is subject to APL-SA license should be enough.

• What is the difference between the APL licenses and a Freeware License?

  A Freeware License says that the author waives his intellectual property rights, while the APL says that author passed them under certain conditions.

• I came across a mod that uses a Freeware license and nothing else. Where does that fall? It states that permission must be granted by the license holders prior to any use of said mod in any mission or mod.

  A "Freeware" license requiring permission for modification or usage is not freeware. Bohemia Interactive cannot comment on such license (or take any action unless it breaks Bohemia Interactive's product EULA) - it's entirely up to its respective author.

• Is it now allowed to use newly released Arma 1 unbinarized content into Arma:CWA?

  Yes, it is.

• What is the difference between the APL licenses and a Freeware License?

  A Freeware License says that the author waives his intellectual property rights, while the APL says that author passed them under certain conditions.

• Is it somehow planned to release all Arma:CWA unbinarized content under the same licenses?

  No, it's not planned at the moment.

• I also want Arma 3 MLODs. Can I have them?

  We did not release any Arma 3 data under BI licenses yet, and we cannot give them to you based on personal request.

• What's the benefit of the release of unbinarized RTM (animations) - are they required for binarization or P:\ drive?

  We decided to release the unbinarized animations so that people can edit them further, improve or base their own work on what they could learn from the package.

• Do the released packages contain complete A2+OA+DLC data?

  Yes, the complete Arma 2: Combined Operations package is available. There may be some data (e.g. map projects) which we did not release, but it's mostly for technical reasons.

• Does the source data contain everything except textures and sounds? People still need textures and sounds for the models, so they have to: 1) have A2/OA to use it; 2) be allowed to use ALDP PBOs to have them; 3) be allowed to extract textures and sounds and repack to their releases.

  We decided not to release the source data in unbinarized form, as it would multiply the size of the data packs beyond possibilities of feasible handling or download. In order to get to sounds and textures, addon makers are free to unpack the ALDP packages, rework their content and repack the derivatives in their releases.

• Is it possible to offer Arma 2: Combined Operations data for a modification like All-In-Arma in A3 with the ALDP data?

  Yes, it's possible as ALDP is licensed under APL and APL-SA licenses, which specifically allow use in any Arma game. Direct usage of the original ALDP PBOs is not a problem provided they are distributed along with their respective licenses, although it's not their primary and Bohemia Interactive cannot be held responsible for in-game functionality of these PBOs.

• Can I release a source file (e.g. texture template) based on the ALDP?

  Yes, it's the same as with addons based on Bohemia Interactive's data. You need to abide to the conditions of the license under which the particular ALDP data were released.

• Are you planning to release Take On: Helicopters sample models and licensed data packs?

  We have released the Take On Helicopters Data Pack in April 2015.
